What is an impact factor?

Impact factor (English: Impact factor, abbreviation: IF), impact index or translation number, impact factor, is a data in the Journal Citation Report (JCR) of the American Institute for Scientific Information (ISI). Refers to the frequency of citations of a journal's articles in a specific year or period, and is an important indicator to measure the influence of academic journals. It has brought a series of major innovations to the development of bibliometrics.

Why does sci partition?

The IF of journals keeps fluctuating every year. It is not suitable to use the fixed IF value as an academic evaluation index. Moreover, the impact factors of journals in different disciplines vary greatly, and IF alone cannot intuitively compare journals in different fields. Therefore, the journals in the same subject area are sorted by IF from large to small, and then divided into different regions. Then, as long as it is a journal in Zone 1 of a certain field, it is the top journal in the field, which intuitively reflects the level and general ranking of the journal in the field.

JCR division: Clarivate Analytics publishes JCR (Journal Citation Reports, full name Journal Citation Reports) annually. JCR divides the journals into 176 different subject categories, and each subject category is divided into 4 areas on average according to the impact factor of the journal:

The journals with the top 25% (including 25%) of the impact factor are in the Q1 area; the journals with an impact factor of 25-50% (including 50%) are in the Q2 area; = the journals with an impact factor of 50-75% (including 75%) are in the Q3 area; impact Journals with a factor below 75% are in the Q4 region.

Division of Chinese Academy of Sciences: The Chinese Academy of Sciences first divides all journals in JCR into 13 categories of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, geology, astronomy, engineering technology, medicine, environmental science, agriculture and forestry science, social science, management science and comprehensive period. Then, the 13 categories of journals are divided into 4 grades, that is, 4 districts. According to the impact factors of various journals, 5% are in the 1st area, 6%-20% are in the 2nd area, 21%-50% are in the 3rd area, and the rest are in the 4th area.
