Writing method and format requirements of English thesis

How should we write a qualified English thesis? Is the format of English thesis the same as that of Chinese thesis? The editor of this issue will share with you the writing format of English papers.

The format of English thesis mainly consists of title, outline, abstract, body, quotation in the text, bibliography, thesis abstract and so on.

  1. Title: a long English thesis (such as an English graduation thesis) generally needs a title page, and its writing format is as follows: the distance between the title of the first line and the top of the printing paper is about one-third of the full length of the printing paper, and the distance from the down line (usually by, centered) is 5cm, and the third and fourth lines are the author's name and date (both centered).

  2. Outline: the outline page of an English paper includes the topic sentence and the outline itself. Its standard format is as follows: first type the word "thesis" and colon at the beginning of the first line (the distance from the top of the print paper is still about 2.5cm), and then type the topic sentence after leaving a blank space. When returning to the line, the left side must be aligned with the first letter of the topic sentence. The main compendium is marked with capital Roman numerals, and the secondary compendium is marked with capital English letters, Arabic numerals and lowercase English letters in turn. Each number or letter is followed by a period, and the first letter of the item will be typed after a space is left; For a compendium at the same level, its upper, lower, and left sides must be aligned. It should be noted that there must be more than two equally important compendiums, that is, there should be I and II, there should be a and B, and so on. If the outline of the English paper is long and requires two pages, the second page must be numbered with lowercase Roman numerals in the upper right corner, i.e. II (the first page does not need to be numbered).

  3. Abstract: English abstract is a short article that uses a written language that conforms to English grammar and provides a summary of the content of the paper. (the content is basically the same as the Chinese abstract, but it does not need to be completely sentence by sentence corresponding).

  4. Body: for an English paper with a title page and an outline page, the standard format of the first page of the body is: the title of the paper is centered, and its position is about 5cm away from the top of the printed paper and about 1.5cm away from the first line of the body. The first letter of the paragraph must be indented five spaces, that is, from the sixth space. The first page of the text does not need to be numbered (but the number of pages should be calculated). From the second page, the last name of the author of the paper must be marked in the upper right corner of each page (that is, the first line is left blank, and then the number of pages is marked with Arabic numerals after one space is left blank); Arabic numerals (or their last digit) should be the last space on the line. When printing the text, you should pay attention to the printing format of punctuation marks, that is, the end of the sentence (period, question mark and exclamation point) should be blank two spaces, and other punctuation marks should be blank one space.

  5. Quotation in the article: correctly quoting the original text of the work or the discussion of experts and scholars is an important part of writing a good English thesis; We should not only pay attention to the organic unity of quotation and thesis, that is, its logic, but also pay attention to the standardization of quotation format (that is, English thesis references). When quoting others' views, you can quote them directly or indirectly. No matter what method is adopted, the author of the paper must indicate the author and source of the quoted text. The common practice in American academic circles is to indicate the author and source of the quotation in parentheses after the quotation.

  6. Bibliography: the author of the paper must provide the detailed publication of all citations in the paper after the body, that is, the bibliography page.

  7. Abstract: English paper abstract, also known as abstract, is an important part of the paper. It is a short article that concisely and accurately describes the important contents of the literature without comments and supplementary explanations for the purpose of providing a summary of the content of the literature. The abstract should be independent and self-evident, and have the same amount of main information as the literature, that is, important information can be obtained without reading the full text.
