Why are core journals far more difficult to publish papers than ordinary journals?

Some authors who have just begun to try to publish papers may have such a question: why is it different from the standard of ordinary journals that core journals are so difficult to publish papers. In this issue, the editor will explain why it is so difficult to publish papers in core journals.

Next, let's talk about the main topic. The editor will compare the quality, recognition, publishing difficulty, price, cycle and other aspects of the journal.

  1. Journal quality. Without too much explanation, the quality of core journals is high, which is far higher than that of ordinary journals. Of course, core journals and general journals can be converted to each other, but this proportion is extremely small, and the conversion proportion of each selection is less than 1%. And there are many core journals turning to non core, and few non core journals turning to core. For example, in the 2017 edition of the core of Peking University, more than 20 copies were eliminated, and more than 10 copies became the new core, accounting for about 0.5%. Core journals are of high quality both in terms of impact factors and articles.

  2. Recognition. Whether it is the units that evaluate the titles or the public, the recognition of core journals is much higher than that of general journals. Some units only recognize the core, and publishing general journals is equivalent to a piece of waste paper, which is worthless and even ridiculed.

  3. Publishing difficulty. Except for some high-end general periodicals, the basic success rate of general periodicals is more than 30%, while that of core periodicals is less than 1%.

  4. Price. That is, the layout fee. This basic difference is not big, but there are two extremes of core journals. They are either very cheap, do not charge layout fees or even pay royalties, but some are very expensive. For example, the layout fee of "Chinese edible fungi" is about 5000 yuan, while the general journal generally does not have such a high price.

  5. Cycle. This is one of the very big differences between the two. The general journal usually solicits contributions in about six months. For example, this year is April 28, 2020, and the regular magazines will receive contributions in November and October 2020. The recruitment of medicine and education will be faster. It may be the first half of 2021 by the end of the year, but almost all core journals will be recruited by the end of 2021, or even 2022. And generally, what I said is that general core journals do not accept expediting, while general journals can accept expediting.

  6. Other differences. For example, the audit cycle is generally from January to march for the core, and 1-20 days for the general publication.
